The worlds most social cats, lions live in groups called prides. She will engage in a lot of display and she will also be defensive and scrappy. While a lioness is usually about 5 feet (1.5 meters) long and around 400 pounds (181.4 kilograms), males can be as long as 8 feet (2.4 meters) and tip the scales at 550 pounds (249.5 kilograms). Much like her feline cousins, a lioness coming into heat will advertise her readiness with sent marking, calling, rubbing on objects and rolling around on the ground. Breeding is not seasonal with lions but the females in a pride will often be synchronized in estrus. Lion Matingįemale lions will start mating at about 4 years of age, while males begin closer to 5. Much as it is with other big cats, she decides when, where and how often mating will take place. When a lioness is in heat and looking to mate, she calls all the shots. Given a lion pride may have several females, his work is cut out for him. When a lion receives his mating call to duty, he is required to muster up all the stamina he has to satisfy his lioness.
